Komuhimbo Ruth. Born: 6th September, 2002

Background: Ruth lives in Katanga slum together with 5 other siblings. The mother is employed to sweep the roads in Kampala for a wage. This is how she is able to pay for rent, food and other needs. The father has been mentally ill for a long time but he is getting better and once in a while when he is mentally fine, he works as a potter, carrying luggage for people in the city. Ruth had a sponsor before who stopped in 2014 and she is now re-sponsored by a loving sponsor. She now has hope of going back to school and have a bright future.

Background: Before sponsorship, she was on and off school due to lack of school fees because the mother did not have a job from which she could get money to pay her school fees since the father had just abandoned them. She stays in Bunamwaya with her poor mother in a small square muddy house with windows covered with plastic, and a leaking roof. Now her mother tries to earn some money by washing people’s clothes in their homes. Jovia now has a loving sponsor family, that loves and takes care of her. She is in school like other children with stable education. .

Background: Before he was sponsored he had spent one year without going to school. He lost his father and the mother abandoned him when he was five months old with his twin Brother William. The mother left them at their grandfather’s home in Bunamwaya who also passed away in June 2012. The grandfather started taking care of him in 1998 and by then he was strong and could provide him with education from the job he was doing. He took care of them for 14 years before he lost the strength and energy of working and he could not provide him with basic needs and stable education. They used to depend on the neighbors to have food to eat. Right now, they stay alone in the house without any guardian taking care of them. His 1st sponsor stopped paying for him in 2011 he was put out of school but in 2014, he was re-sponsored and is again able to go to school.

Background: He lives in Makerere Kivulu slum in Kampala with his mother and five other siblings. He lost his father when he was still young, and the mother was left helpless to take care of the children on her own since there were no other relatives to help her. She could not afford to pay his school fees, or even feed her children. Before he was sponsored, he had spent one year without going to school. William is now in a good secondary school, and the mother tries to earn a living by selling cooked food to drunkards in the slum.

Background: She lost her father to a car accident when she was still young and was left with her mother who was jobless at the time and could not take care of the children. They had to depend on their relatives and neighbors for food, and it was difficult for them to find a place to stay. They started living in a two roomed small muddy house with their uncle in Bunamwaya but the uncle is also very poor and a drunkard. Before she was sponsored she was not going to school for a period of 1 year (2009). Now Winnie is sponsored, she is going to school, and having a good education.

Background: He lost his father and the mother abandoned him when he was still very young. He grew up with foster parent who stays in Seguku and she has been taking care of him since the father died. Before he was sponsored, he was on and off school and the foster parent was unable to pay all his school fees in time. But when he got sponsored in 2010, he started going to school and having a stable education. Now the foster parent left her with an old lady who is her mother to look after him during holidays. He is happy at school and having a stable education..

Background: She lost her father to an accident when she was 5 years old. She stays in a small single room in Kireka with her mother who is a tomato seller on a small stall alongside the streets. She earns less than a dollar a day which is not enough support her family. Before she got sponsored, she was on and off school in one of the poor schools in her area due to lack of school fees. Flavia had a sponsor before but she stopped in January 2015 and she is now re-sponsored and very happy. She is glad that she can attend school again without being chased away and she looks forward to a bright future. Thanks to her new sponsor.

Background: He was abandoned by her mother when he was one and half year. The father stays in the village and he is HIV positive. Before sponsorship, he was staying with his sister but life was not easy for them since she had no job to support his brother and she left him with the neighbors to take care of him in 2011. At the beginning of 2013, her auntie started taking care of him. She stays with Charles and her 4 children in a small singel house in Kivulu Slum in Kampala. Charles is in school now ever since he got sponsorship. He now has a loving sponsor family and his auntie who is taking care of him during the holiday.

Background: Her parents separated when she was still young and her father abandoned her. She is now staying with her grandmother and other siblings in Katanga slum. The mother used to help her neighbor to prepare food for other people in the slum where they live, in order to earn little money but that was barely enough to buy food for Bonita or even send her to school. Now that she is sponsored, Bonita can go to school. Her mother has also been able to do some other work in Juba while Bonita lives with her grand mother, who makes crafts to earn money to take care of her grandchildren. Bonita is grateful and glad that she has an opportunity to study and a caring sponsor family to care for her.

Background: Before she got sponsored, she was staying in Katanga slum and the parents sent her to the village since they had no money to send her to school because it was the father who used to work and he was earning little money from his job. And when she got a sponsor, they had to move away from Katanga and went to Kazo where they are staying. Now the father works in a small shop in Katanga slum where he gets money to take care of his family. The mother has always been jobless, she only takes care of the children at home. Patience is now in school and with a sponsor that loves and cares for her.

Background: He lost his father to a motor car accident when he was still young and had to leave school because the mother could not afford to pay his school fees due to lack of money. She had no job and had to depend on her sister for food and paying rent. He lives with his mother in Naguru slum together with his younger sister. In a very small muddy house with timber on it. Since Michael got sponsorship he went back to school and is very happy to have a loving sponsor parent. His mother has also managed to pick herself up by doing a small job picking coffee for a small wage.

Background: He lost his father and the mother abandoned him when he was five months old. Background: She lost her father in a war in northern Uganda when she was very young and was taken up by a guardian who brought her from the village to Kampala. The mother cannot support her with anything because she is a farmer who gets little and she is very far in the village but Annet visits her once in year. Before she got sponsored, she had dropped out of school in 2009 due to lack of school fees since the guardian had no job and could not afford to send her to school. In 2010 she got a sponsor who is paying her school fees. She has regained hope to live life happily. Her guardian was trying to support her and her family from the money she was getting as shop attendant but she fell sick in 2011 and she was taken by her relatives to the village. She is now being looked after by her uncle in Kireka who is a carpenter.

Background: Before Raymond was sponsored he was not going to school since his father was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure and had to use cratches for support. Because of all the medical complications the father lost his job and was unemployed and as a result he could not take care of the family with five children. He died at the beginning of 2012. Raymond’s mother was also without a job and was unemployed and they were helped by the relatives with almost everything. For a long time they could not afford to pay school fees or buy food for the family. Now that Raymond is sponsored, he is in school. His mother tries to support the family by washing clothes for people around their village.

The father has been unemployed for a long time now because he is old, very sickly and can’t do any form of work that could earn him money. Background: She was born in Gulu Northern Uganda, a war zone for the Kony rebels. Her mother passed away when giving birth and after two years her father also died in a traffic accident. By the time her father died she had just finished her primary level and due to lack of school fees, she could not join High school because she had no one to give her education to the next level. Her grandmother took her on but without any support because she was very poor. Susan was brought to Kampala city by an orphanage group which was looking for orphans so that they can find for them sponsors to take them to school but in December 2014, the orphanage stopped looking after them. She was given an opportunity to go back to school by getting a wonderful loving sponsor family who have supported her in paying all her school fees. She has now been able to join High school and she is being helped and looked after by a foster parent while she is in her holidays.

Background: Before sponsorship, Juliana was not in school until when she was sponsored. She comes from a needy family where the mother was the oly one to take care of the children as the father was not giving any help until when the mother left the home and found another house to stay with the 3 children. He could not buy basic needs and pay for Juliana’s school fees. By then, the mother was employed by someone in the slum to work as a waitress but was earning little income which could not support the family at all. After she had got sponsorship Juliana's life changed and she can now be at school with the help her sponsor paying all her school fees. Now the mother grows and sells food for a living.

Background: At a young age, he was living on the streets of Kampala when he was picked up by one of the coaches at the sports academy. He took him to his academy where he started training football. Yahaya does not know who his parents are and before he got sponsorship, he was not even going to school. Yahaya is now a reformed and very talented boy, who is grateful for being rescued. He is now sponsored and happy to be in school, like other children of his age. He is living in a home with a foster family, that takes care of him just like the rest of the other children.

Background: Cynthia is a sister to Clince. They were abandoned by their father. They are now staying with the mother who washes cloths for people to earn a leaving. Before sponsorship, they were both out of the whole year of 2009 and Cynthia and her brother used to wash clothes for neighbors, the work that the mother used to do while she was fine in order to get money for food and rent. They used to eat one meal a day since they didn’t earn everyday because the job was not permanent. In 2010 the mother had started washing clothes for people, selling forever products so that she can take her children to school. In that same year the mother fell sick in November 2010 which took her long time to recover and still the children where the one to look out for food and they were still out of school. Cynthia was once sponsors' but the sponsor stopped and in July 2012 she got a new sponsor who took her back to school and is now having stable good education.

Background: Before he was sponsored, his grandmother couldn’t barely afford to take good care of him or even send him to school since she had grown so old and weak to work. They would only get money for survival from well-wishers and neighbors. Before Alex’s father died in January 2015, he was giving them some support with food and other basic needs. The mother abandoned him when he was a baby in a small restaurant in town the grandmother picked him. Alex is sponsored, he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business administration at Makerere University which he joined in August 2014. Background: He lives in a very small house in Katanga slum with his poor mother who sweeps the streets of Kampala city to earn money to take care of her children. Before he got sponsored, Brain was cleaning toilets so as to get money for food for his family and school fees. He would pay for himself school fees in a very low standard school but still the money would never be enough because sometimes he would not go to school because he was working hard to get money for school fees. The money he was earning was very little and the whole family was looking at him to feed them and buy other needs. His wish was to be able to go to school, without missing like other children of his age. Brian has been sponsored since 2011 by a sponsor family that loves and cares for him and is also able to go to a good school.

Background: He lost his mother to HIV/AIDS and the father abandoned him when he was still young. He stays with the grandmother in the village who is taking care of him. The grandma is a mere farmer who only grows food for home consumption. She is very poor in that she cannot afford to pay school fees for him in a good school. They are sometimes helped by neighbors and other well-wishers to provide food for her family. Before sponsorship, Juuko was on and off school in a very poor school near by his village. The grandmother could not keep him consistently in school because she is very poor so he couldn’t go sometimes. At the end of 2011 he got a sponsor and is now in school. He has hope that he will have a bright future and is very grateful for the love from his sponsor family.

She lives in Katanga slum with her mother. Before Puccu got sponsored, she was not able to go to school. Her father got mentally ill when she was still very young, so she was left with just her mother who did not have a job by then, and could not take care of the children. Now Puccu has a loving sponsor family and she is going to school. Her mother has also tried to regain her life back and tries to sell snacks in the slum streets when she can in order to survive with her 4 children.

Background: He lost his father and mother to HIV/AIDS and he is now staying with his grandmother in Mukono. Before he was sponsored in January 2012, he was going to school in one of the small poor schools in his village. He was on and off school because of lack of school fees, so it was very difficult for him to stay in school and have a stable education. The grandmother is jobless and she has many grandchildren who are orphans to take care of although some of them are not in school. She is also suffering from HIV/AIDS, weak and on medication. Hamza had a sponsor who stopped in Feb 2015 and he is now re-sponsored by a loving sponsor parents who has given him hope again for a bright future and is now happy to go to school again.

Background: Gift lost her father in 2009 to a car accident and the mother went to Juba in Southern Sudan to look for a job so that she can look after her children but she did not come back. Gift used to stay with her late grandmother in Katanga slum who passed away in 2013. The grandmother used to sell food in the slum and she was earning little from her job. She fell sick and became weak and weaker and she couldn’t do any kind of job until the day she died. Gift had to stay with her aunt when her grandmother died and now she is now living with her in Makindye in a small single roomed house. The aunt is jobless and they all depend on her boyfriend to provide food and a place to stay. Before sponsorship, Gift was on and off school due to lack of school fees and she was praying for an opportunity to go back to school and attain more education. Now that she is sponsored since 2011, she is having a happy life at school.

Background: She lives in the slums of Katanga in a very small single roomed house. The father abandoned them when Brenda was still young, and they never knew where he was until December 2011 when they were told that he had died. Brenda got a sponsor and is very happy to be in school, with a loving sponsor family. The mother tries to get food for her children by sweeping the roads on the streets of Kampala city.

Background: She stays with her mother in Kalerwe where they are renting a small single roomed house. The father abandoned them when Janet was 3 years old and since then they have never seen him again. Life has not been easy for them since the mother has been earning very little money from making envelopes and this greatly affected Janet because she ended up being on and off school and most times she was chased away from school due to lack of school fees. She is now rescued and loved by a sponsor family who cares about her and supports her in school fees.

Background: She was rejected by her father at birth and chased both mother and daughter from his home. The mother had no job and place to stay by then. She decided to leave her at her auntie at her Aunt’s place until when she gets something to do for a living. The aunt tried to put her in school but she used to be on and off school because of lack of money since she was earning little from her job. Ever since she was rejected, they have never seen him again and Cate never got a chance of knowing him. Now she stays with the mother in a small single roomed house in Kireka who is now working in a small shop to earn money to take care of Cate. Background: Before sponsorship, they were on and off school and by then the mother was jobless and she could not find money to give them stable education. The father had abandoned them when they were very young and they have never got a chance of seeing him again. At the time they were sponsored, the mother had started working in Mulago Hospital as a cleaner and she was earning less income which could not help in paying rent, buy food, and pay school fees for the children. They are staying in Katanga slum in a two small roomed house. They are now sponsored and very happy to be in school again.

Background: He lost a father in 2014 and he stays with his mother and other 6 siblings in Katwe slums. Before sponsorship, he was on and off school due to lack of school fees and his parents couldn’t give him stable education. The father was is a hawker and the mother was jobless. He used to play football in one of the academies which helped him to find a loving sponsor family who paid his school fees for year 2011 and stopped. He now got a new sponsor parent who is paying for his University and he is perusing a Diploma in Computer science at Ndejje University. His dream since childhood is to became a soccer player and a business man after he finishes school.


Nalwadda Florence
Background: Florence was picked up from the village by her aunt at the age of 5 months old because her mother was severely sick and mentally ill. No one knows who her father is, because an unknown man in the village raped her mother and she got pregnant with Florence. Due to her mother’s health condition, Florence’s aunt decided to take her on as her child by bringing her to her home in Katanga slum where she is staying now. The auntie has no permanent job, she does any kind of jobs that come her way like washing people’s clothes but the money she earns from this cannot cover the needs like food and rent and also pay for school fees. Florence had a sponsor that paid her fees from 2010 until On 3rd May 2012 when her first sponsor stopped. Florence was lucky to get another sponsor 15th June 2012 who is paying her school fees now.


Auma Alice.

Background: Her father was killed by rebels in Northern Uganda, Gulu. She was left with her mother who also passed way in 2006 after suffering from HIV/AIDS. She had to stay in the Internally Displaced People’s camps in western Uganda where a good Samaritan got her and brought her to Kampala for fear for her life because of wars which were taking place by then. By bringing her to Kampala they also saved her from being raped by the rebels. Her wish was to go to school, and get an education, but before she was sponsored, she had dropped out of school due to lack of school fees. Alice is now sponsored, and she is going to school. She is happy and hopes to become a nurse in future. She was staying in an orphanage in Kampala which later closed in December 2014 and she now has to come from the village to go to school and during holidays she goes back.

Background: The father separated with the mother when he was still young. Before sponsorship, Innocent was on and off school but the father was earning very little money which could not take care of the family and pay school fees for Innocent and the brother. He is staying with his father and one brother of his in Nsambya Barracks. The father is a security guard and he works hard to take care of his family and sending his other child to school. Since innocent was sponsored, he is now having a stable education and is happy to be in school. He hopes to become a professional footballer in future.

Background: Before she was sponsored, she was not in school for 2 years. They were affected by the war in the Northern Uganda which forced her family to move from their home in the village. The parents separated after the mother finding out that the husband was HIV positive. The father had no money to look after the children because he had no job by then. They were helped by neighbors for food. She now has another sponsor to help her continue with her education. Now the father has a jobs and works as a cleaner in certain company.

She is now staying with her Auntie who is a tomato seller in Katanga slum. Sometimes they go without food. Since Perus was sponsored, her life changed and is able to go to school.

He was abandoned by his father when he was still a very young kid. Since then they have never seen him again. She got sponsored in 2011 and now is in school and is having a stable education after she is being sponsored.


Mulungi Apollo.Sponsored by Adagala Jackson - Nairobi, KenyaBackground: He stays with his grandmother in Katanga slum. He was born normally but got crippled when he was seven months old. He lost both parents and the mother died when he was two months old. He is under the care of the grandmother who has no job and they are being helped by well-wishers and neighbors. She has many grand children to look after but she cannot take them to school. The father abandoned them many years back. They used to stay in Katanga slum but they left because the house was linking and was about to fall on them since Robinah has a sponsor parent, she is happy to be in school like other children.

Back ground: Betty and her sister Susan were abandoned by their mother when she found out that the father has HIV/AIDS. They used to live in the village and then they moved to Kampala. They live with their father and a step mother in Nyanama. The father works as a cleaner in a cosmetic factory. Before she got her first sponsor she was not going to school for 2 years (2009 and 2010) because the father was not able to send them to school. She got a sponsor who later stopped in 2013 but she is now re-sponsored and has hope of going back to school.

Namirembe Angel Pretty, born: 28th August 2001.
Sponsored by Inge and Jens Teilmann-Denmark. Background: She lives in a family of 6 children near Katanga slum together with her parents. Working in a small shop in the slum, her father tries to provide for them, but doesn’t make enough to feed them as well as have enough left for school fees. By the time Angel was sponsored, he was working as a street vendor selling airtime, and now he is working in a small shop in the slums. At that time, the mother was not working and they all depending on the father to provide. On some days, they would however go to bed without food. Angel’s 1st sponsor stopped in June 2011 and in December 2014 she got a new sponsor who gave her hope of going back to school and nd make her dreams come true.

Background: She lives in a small single house in Katanga slum, together with 3 siblings and her mother. She lost her father to a motor accident.
The mother used to sell sweets along side the road, to be able to support her family, but it was not possible to provide for food, rent and also send Shakira to school. Her work with the sweets has now stopped because they were chased off the roads. The mother has no stable job. Shakira is now re-sponsored and is able to go to school again.

sponsored by: Geert and Katleen Piette - Belgium. Background: She lives in Katanga slum together with 3 other siblings, her mother and her father who takes care of them only from time to time. Before being sponsored, she had completely dropped out of school because they could not afford the school fees and the mother could not provide food for her family as well as pay for the school. The father didn’t not have a job from which he could earn enough for them, and so she had to remain at home. He now works at building sites, where he helps carry around bricks. She is now re-sponsored and very happy to be back in school again.

She once had a sponsor but she stopped December 2012, she is now re-sponsored by a loving family who are willing to give her stable education.

Background: He lost his father to HIV/AIDS but after his father’s death, the mother remarried and unfortunately the second husband also died. They were left helpless with no one to turn to. Marvin was on and off school, and for a long time his wish was to go back to school continuously without missing. He lives with the Grandmother in Naguru slum who earns little money from the tailoring, but the money is not enough to take good care of Marvin and paying his school fees. Marvin’s first sponsor stopped in 2013 and he is now re-sponsored by a school in Denmark who loves him very much, therefore, he is able to go back to school.

Background: His father was killed in a tragic motor accident, and he was left with his mother who was without a job at that time and five other children. Before he was sponsored, Jamada was on and off school because the mother was struggling to feed the children, so she could not afford to give him stable education. Now the mother tries to support her family by operating in a small saloon in the slum where she gets money to take care of her children. They stay in a single small roomed house in Katanga slum. Jamada had a sponsor but his sponsor stopped in January 2014 and now he is re-sponsored by a loving family and he is very happy to have a sponsor again.

Background: Before sponsorship, she was in primary four but she was on and off school. Stella comes from a needy family and her father does not care about the family even though they used to stay together. He could not buy basic needs and paying for Stella’s school fees. By then the mother was working as a waitress in the slum and was earning little income which could not support the family at all. The mother separated with the husband and Stella is now staying with the mother. Right now, the mother is having unstable job and cannot fund Stella’s education. Her sponsor stopped in 2013 but she is now re-sponsored and she is able to go to school.

Background: Before sponsorship, Moses had stopped going to school for1year. He lost both parents when he was still very young and he did not get a chance of seeing them. He was raised up by his Uncle until when he was 10 years old. He ran away from his Uncle's home because they accused him of being a thief and they were mistreating him by giving him heavy punishments. He ran to the streets where he spent two weeks and then he was picked up by one of the Forever sports Academy football coach who took him to the sports academy. He began training football as we found him a sponsor to support his education. Fortunately he got a sponsor who loves him and is taking care of his education. He is very grateful to be in school and having a loving sponsor parent. He is living with a foster parent that took him in Ndejje- Lubugumu and she loves him very much.

She was abandoned by her father when she was a very little girl and they don’t know whether he is still alive or not. For the last 6 years, Rehema has stayed with her aunt in Nsangi. The aunt has 4 of her own children to take care of, in addition to Rehema. Rehema’s mother was left helpless when the father abandoned them, and she felt she could not take care of her children. She left and got remarried to another man, leaving Rehema in the care of her aunt. Sometimes, after a very long time, she comes by to visit, but does not offer any support to them. Before being sponsored, Rehema was not going to school. Rehema got a sponsor but unfortunately they stopped in 2012 and we had to take her out of school until when we find her a new sponsor.
